Ankara: Syrian security forces in Deir ez-Zor: Syrian security forces in eastern Syria have arrested leaders identified as remnants of the Assad regime due to suspicions of their involvement in planning attacks against security and government facilities, as per an official statement.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Deir ez-Zor provincial security department issued a statement on Sunday confirming that the city's security directorate had apprehended leaders from the defunct regime. These individuals were allegedly plotting to target security and government headquarters within the province. The statement, however, did not disclose further details regarding the arrests.

The arrests follow a series of coordinated attacks last Thursday in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, where supporters of the ousted Assad regime executed the most significant assaults seen since the regime's fall in December. These attacks focused on security patrols, checkpoints, and hospitals, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries.

In response to these events, security and military forces initiated comprehensive operations to apprehend the attackers, which led to intense clashes. Subsequently, the Syrian presidency announced the establishment of an independent national commission tasked with investigating the occurrences in the coastal region.

The ousting of Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, marked the end of the Baath Party's rule, which began in 1963. Assad fled to Russia on December 8, paving the way for Ahmed al-Sharaa, a leader of the anti-regime forces, to be declared president for a transitional period starting January 29.
