Taipei: Taiwan's leader announced that Taipei had a "smooth" first round of negotiations on tariffs with the United States. William Lai Ching-te highlighted the island's economic resilience and outlined strategies to mitigate the impact of new US tariffs, such as providing support to affected industries. According to Anadolu Agency, Lai also stated that Taipei will not retaliate against the tariffs imposed by Washington. Instead, Taiwan plans to import more US merchandise to help reduce the trade deficit. This approach comes in the wake of US President Donald Trump's decision to impose a 32% tariff on the island's goods. However, Trump recently paused these tariffs for 90 days on all countries except China, maintaining a base 10% tariff. The discussions between Taiwan and the US are part of ongoing efforts to manage trade relations and economic impacts resulting from new tariff policies.
