Istanbul: Tangerines were the most consumed fruit and tomatoes the most preferred vegetable in Istanbul in 2025, according to data from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

According to Anadolu Agency, the city's Bayrampasa and Atasehir wholesale fruit and vegetable markets sold a total of 86 product varieties last year, including 37 fruits and 49 vegetables. A total of 2,774,260 tons of produce were delivered to the two markets in 2025, up from 2,750,633 tons in 2024. Fruit deliveries declined from 1,030,802 tons in 2024 to 957,874 tons in 2025, while vegetable deliveries rose from 1,719,831 tons to 1,816,386 tons over the same period.

In 2025, tangerines led the fruit deliveries with 112,228 tons, followed by bananas, watermelons, oranges, and apples. This marked a shift from 2024, where oranges topped the list. The markets last year received 106,792 tons of bananas, 100,517 tons of watermelons, 91,068 tons of oranges, and 83,216 tons of apples.

For vegetables, tomatoes remained the most delivered, totaling 484,094 tons in 2025. Cucumbers followed with 187,449 tons, while potatoes and peppers were delivered in quantities of 182,489 tons and 166,169 tons, respectively, marking a change in order from the previous year.

In terms of pricing, tangerines were priced at an average of 36.10 Turkish liras ($0.83) per kilogram among fruits, while tomatoes were priced at 52.92 liras ($1.22) among vegetables. Other notable prices included bananas at 69.95 liras ($1.62) per kilogram and cucumbers at 28.76 liras ($0.66).

The top 10 fruits delivered to markets in 2025 also included lemons, grapes, melons, strawberries, and pears. On the vegetable side, onions, cabbage, eggplants, carrots, zucchini, and lettuce were among the most delivered.
