She expressed that her stepping down would allow the party more freedom to implement reforms and build what she described as 'a more complete and modern Pheu Thai.' This move comes after the Constitutional Court's dismissal of Paetongtarn in August on grounds of an ethics violation. The court ruled that a phone call she had with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen compromised national interests, involving guarantees about a border dispute and criticism of a Thai military general.

This event adds to the ongoing challenges within Thailand's political landscape, characterized by frequent conflicts between elected officials and the judiciary since the removal of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006.
