TikTok Permanently Suspends Ads for Elon Musk Documentary

Istanbul:TikTok has permanently suspended the advertising account promoting "Musk," a documentary about billionaire Elon Musk, due to repeated infractions of its political-content policies.

According to Anadolu Agency, distributor Bleecker Street was informed on Friday afternoon that its advertising account would be permanently suspended. This action prevents the company from purchasing ads or boosting content about the film on TikTok.

While the documentary's unpaid TikTok account remains active, Bleecker Street can no longer use paid advertisements to enhance its posts. A spokesperson for Bleecker Street confirmed the suspension and expressed disappointment over the timing, which coincided with the documentary's expansion to over 470 theaters in North America. The company is currently appealing TikTok's decision.

TikTok cited a "level of severity with political-policy violations" in its communication with the distributor, noting that certain violations result in immediate suspension. Previously, the platform had rejected paid advertising for the documentary's trailer. Similarly, Meta and Google-owned YouTube initially declined such ads but later reversed their decisions. X, owned by Musk, has also refused to carry advertising for the film.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, "Musk" explores the entrepreneur's business ventures, acquisition of Twitter, and political involvement with the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The documentary, nearly four hours in length, earned $70,000 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles during its opening weekend and has since expanded to numerous cities across North America. It is set to stream on HBO in 2027.
