Algiers: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Monday that Trkiye and Algeria are committed to enhancing their collaboration on regional issues and formulating joint policies. This statement came after his meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his visit to Algeria.
According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions also covered the situation in Gaza, with Fidan emphasizing the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid and establishing a ceasefire. He reiterated Trkiye's support for the Palestinian people and expressed gratitude to Algeria for its defense of the Palestinian cause.
Fidan mentioned the upcoming High-Level Strategic Cooperation Meeting in Trkiye, where President Tebboune is expected to visit later this year. He acknowledged Algeria's economic advancements under Tebboune's leadership and praised its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, highlighting Algeria's efforts to bring regional priorities to the international agenda.
The foreign minister emphasized the growing strength of the relationship between Trkiye and Algeria, attributing it to the mutual trust fostered by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Tebboune. Fidan assured that Trkiye would remain a reliable ally for Algeria.
During his engagements with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and President Tebboune, Fidan expressed satisfaction with Algeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Discussions at the Joint Planning Group Meeting covered a range of topics, including trade, transportation, migration, and health.
Fidan highlighted the potential to increase the trade volume between the two countries to $10 billion, with over 1,000 Turkish companies already contributing to Algeria's economy. He mentioned upcoming agreements aimed at fostering trade and investment, which would further enhance economic relations.
Energy security and defense industry cooperation were identified as key areas for future collaboration. Fidan announced the opening of Trkiye's Consulate General in Oran, intended to serve both Turkish citizens and Algerians.
Addressing international issues, Fidan reiterated Trkiye's commitment to advocating for Palestinians on global platforms. He also discussed the importance of dialogue for peace and stability in Libya and joint efforts to address terrorism and extremism in the Sahel region.
Fidan concluded by affirming Ankara's support for Algiers' diplomatic approach to regional issues and expressed optimism that his visit would further advance Trkiye-Algeria relations.
