Sofia: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Thursday that Trkiye and Bulgaria have solidified their intention to construct a new border crossing north of the Kapikule border gate. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova in Sofia, where both nations also called for the US and Iran to cease hostilities and resume negotiations.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan emphasized the strengthening ties between the two neighboring NATO allies, covering a range of areas such as border security, energy, transportation, and trade. He expressed confidence in the joint initiative to build a new border crossing, aimed at enhancing capacity and connectivity through road and railway projects, which are expected to bolster regional connectivity.
Fidan reiterated the commitment of both countries to tackle shared threats to border security, particularly irregular migration. He highlighted the strategic significance of improved transportation infrastructure, which is anticipated to benefit regional supply chains, the Middle Corridor, and Europe as a whole. Additionally, Fidan thanked Bulgarian authorities for facilitating smooth border crossings for Turkish citizens during the summer.
On the topic of energy cooperation, Fidan noted the expanded and diversified relations between Trkiye and Bulgaria. He announced that Turkish Petroleum will commence oil and natural gas exploration activities this year in Bulgaria's Han Tervel block within its exclusive economic zone. This energy collaboration, along with transportation initiatives, has directly influenced bilateral trade, with trade volume surpassing £8.4 billion ($9.8 billion) in 2025.
The ministers also addressed regional security concerns, focusing on developments in the Black Sea and the Middle East. Fidan underscored the importance of the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Group, established by Trkiye, Bulgaria, and Romania, in ensuring navigation safety. He affirmed Ankara's dedication to reinforcing this initiative.
Turning to Trkiye-EU relations, Fidan highlighted the strategic importance of Ankara-Brussels ties, particularly in light of recent crises. He stressed the necessity of Trkiye's role in the European framework, advocating for deeper economic integration with the EU to enhance competitiveness and resilience.
Regarding the US-Iran situation, Fidan noted the initial optimism that negotiations would lead to an agreement before the recent escalation. He urged both parties to halt their attacks, return to the negotiating table, and finalize the nearly completed text. Fidan warned against the dangers of escalation, emphasizing the importance of resolving negotiations successfully.
