Ankara: Nine agreements were signed between Trkiye and Nigeria on Tuesday in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Nigerian Head of State Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The agreements were finalized after one-on-one and delegation-level meetings at the Presidential Palace in Trkiye’s capital, Ankara.
According to Anadolu Agency, the signed agreements and memoranda of understanding cover various areas, including cooperation in diaspora policy, media and communication, higher education, halal accreditation, military cooperation, and collaboration with diplomatic academies. Both nations also adopted a joint declaration establishing the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).
The specific agreements between Trkiye and Nigeria include a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Diaspora Policy, a Memorandum of Understanding in Media and Communication, and a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Higher Education. Additionally, there was an agreement between the Halal Accreditation Agency of Trkiye and the Nigerian National Accreditation System on Halal Quality Infrastructure, a Protocol on Military Cooperation, and an Agreement on Cooperation in Education. The two countries further signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between their respective diplomatic academies and an Agreement on Cooperation in Family and Social Policies.
Diplomatic relations between Trkiye and Nigeria were established on November 9, 1960. The bilateral trade volume reached $688.4 million in the first 11 months of 2025. Including energy trade, Nigeria became Trkiye’s largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2025. Over 50 Turkish-owned companies operate in Nigeria, with total investments valued at around $400 million. Turkish contractors have significantly increased their projects in Nigeria, with the total value nearing $3 billion.
In support of Abuja’s counterterrorism efforts, cooperation in military affairs, security, and the defense industry has been growing steadily. Between 1992 and 2023, 199 Nigerian students graduated through Trkiye scholarships, and currently, 149 Nigerian students are pursuing their education in Trkiye under the program.
