Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan communicated to European Council President Antonio Costa that Trkiye anticipates decisive actions from the European Union to enhance relations. This message was conveyed during a phone call on Thursday, where Erdogan congratulated Costa on his appointment and emphasized the mutual benefits of revitalizing ties between Ankara and Brussels.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan and Costa also addressed various regional and global issues. Erdogan underlined the importance of planning joint steps toward European security with Trkiye's involvement, highlighting that such collaboration is in the best interest of all parties. He reiterated Ankara's commitment to achieving a just and sustainable peace between Russia and Ukraine, a goal Trkiye has pursued since the onset of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv.

Additionally, Erdogan expressed Trkiye's satisfaction with the EU's recent decision to suspend certain sanctions against Syria. The EU announced the suspension of sanctions on Syria's energy, transport, and banking sectors to facilitate the country's reconstruction following the fall of the Bashar Assad regime.

Costa responded positively, noting the productive nature of their conversation. He acknowledged Trkiye as a strategic partner, an EU candidate country, and a NATO ally, expressing a desire to strengthen the relationship further. Costa also recognized Ankara's significant role as a regional and global actor and expressed the EU's intention to work closely with Trkiye to secure lasting peace in Ukraine and support a democratic transition in Syria. He also affirmed his backing for the UN Secretary-General's efforts in the Cyprus settlement talks.
