Trkiye Laments Failure to Enforce ICJ’s Precautionary Measures Against Israel Under UN Genocide Convention

Antalya: Trkiye's Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc announced on Monday that the International Court of Justice's precautionary measures against Israel, under the UN Genocide Convention, have not been enforced. Speaking at the 20th International Forensic Medicine Days in Antalya, Tunc emphasized that the ongoing genocide in Gaza for the past two years has highlighted the ineffectiveness of international law and eroded the credibility of international courts.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tunc questioned the enforcement mechanisms, pointing out that the responsibility lies with the UN Security Council, yet the decisions remain unenforced due to a lack of a just structure. He criticized the vetoing of humanitarian aid and ceasefire proposals, stating that despite the International Criminal Court's issuance of arrest warrants, perpetrators are still celebrated internationally, revealing a double standard that undermines trust in international law.

Tunc highlighted the importance of forensic medicine in the pursuit of truth and justice, emphasizing its role in ensuring fair trials and public confidence in the legal system. He described forensic medicine as essential to the law, providing scientific evidence that can solve complex cases and uphold the rule of law.

He noted significant improvements in Trkiye's Forensic Medicine Institution over the last 23 years, with staff numbers increasing from 802 in 2002 to 3,190, and the expansion of specialty boards and departments, positioning it among the world's leading institutions.

Tunc expressed concern over continued human rights violations in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, where he stated that over 65,000 innocent people, mostly women and children, have been killed in the past two years. He criticized the West's silence and hypocrisy, despite claims of defending rights and freedoms.

He concluded by highlighting growing global public outrage and Trkiye's advocacy for a two-state solution, with more countries recognizing Palestine. Tunc mentioned that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to address the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the need for a just world where leaders cannot ignore human rights violations and genocide.
