Ankara: Trkiye officially announced the rollout of its 5G technology network during a ceremony on Tuesday. Trkiye held a 5G technology tender last year with the participation of the country's three main telecom operators, deciding to transition to the new network by April 1, 2026.
According to Anadolu Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at the ceremony titled Trkiye's Strong Presence in 5G Communications, emphasized that 5G will enhance productivity in the areas of competitiveness, communication, technology, energy, and production. He stated that 5G technology will initiate a new chapter in sectors such as transportation, healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, the economy, and education.
Erdogan highlighted the evolving nature of sovereignty in the modern world, where it is no longer confined to geographical or physical boundaries. He pointed out that the rapid advancements in technology and digitalization have transformed traditional concepts of sovereignty. He also underlined the importance of cyberspace, cybersecurity measures, and cyber technologies in maintaining power, influence, and prestige on a global scale.
The President stressed the critical role of data in this era, noting that the ability to collect, process, analyze, and transform data into added value is essential. Ensuring data security is pivotal, and in the digital age, geopolitical supremacy will be determined by those who manage data, not just control land. He stated that 5G, in conjunction with data centers, cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity capabilities, signifies a matter of digital sovereignty and national security.
Abdulkadir Uraloglu, the transport and infrastructure minister, remarked on the strategic importance of 5G technology and its transformative potential for Trkiye's economy, industry, healthcare, transportation, and agriculture. He mentioned that information technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and high-speed connectivity are crucial for economic development, competitiveness, and national security.
The minister emphasized that 5G is more than just faster internet; it represents a smarter, safer, and more efficient future. With data transfer speeds 10 times faster than the existing 4.5G, ultra-low latency, and extensive device connectivity, 5G will place Trkiye at the heart of digital transformation. He noted that the technology will provide a new infrastructure to transform every aspect of life, improve road safety with autonomous driving, and optimize production through smart factories and real-time data analysis.
In smart cities, Uraloglu foresaw innovative solutions emerging in areas like energy management and parking systems. He also mentioned that students will benefit from world-class education through high-resolution and augmented reality-supported content.
