Riyadh: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared Trkiye's willingness to mediate between Iran and the United States to alleviate tensions, emphasizing Ankara's opposition to any military intervention against Tehran. Erdogan conveyed Trkiye's stance during an interview with the Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat amid his visit to Saudi Arabia.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan highlighted the need for diplomatic solutions and the establishment of regional security mechanisms to prevent crises. He stressed Trkiye's commitment to facilitating dialogue and cooperation rather than conflict management, urging regional actors to avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Erdogan also pointed out past conflicts in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, emphasizing lessons learned from these situations.
In discussing Trkiye's relationship with Saudi Arabia, Erdogan underscored the strategic importance of their partnership for regional peace and stability. He noted that the two countries share deep historical ties and a commitment to regional responsibility. Erdogan identified numerous opportunities for collaboration in areas such as economy, trade, investment, and defense, asserting that these potentials should be realized beyond mere agreements.
On the topic of Syria, Erdogan emphasized the significant toll the country has endured due to years of war and division. He called for societal reconciliation and a unified approach to Syria's future, advocating for a nation that embraces all societal segments and poses no threat to its neighbors. Trkiye, alongside allies like Saudi Arabia, aims to support constructive efforts for Syria's unity and stability.
Addressing the situation in Gaza, Erdogan underscored the importance of peacekeeping efforts that focus on civilian protection and humanitarian aid. He reiterated calls for Israeli forces' withdrawal in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and expressed Trkiye's readiness to contribute to peace efforts under appropriate conditions.
