Johannesburg: Trkiye is prepared to host the upcoming UN climate change conference, COP31, in November 2026, as announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the G20 summit in South Africa. The conference is set to take place in Antalya, a Mediterranean resort city, reflecting Trkiye's commitment to addressing global climate issues.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan outlined Trkiye's energy objectives, aiming to significantly increase its solar and wind energy capacity by 2035. This year, the share of renewables in Trkiye's energy mix has already surpassed 60%. The newly adopted Climate Law, which Erdogan described as a pivotal step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2053, is expected to enhance clean technology investments and facilitate a fair transition across all sectors.
Erdogan also highlighted the Zero Waste Project, an initiative led by first lady Emine Erdogan, which has gained international recognition with backing from the United Nations. An agreement with Australia, amid challenges to multilateralism, was also noted as significant. Erdogan praised South Africa's efforts in food security, urging the G20 to bolster initiatives in this area with a focus on developing countries.
In response to the devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, Erdogan detailed Trkiye's extensive reconstruction efforts, with 350,000 units delivered and an additional 100,000 units underway. He emphasized the need for enhanced food and water security, particularly in light of the agricultural challenges faced in 2025.
Turning to Gaza, Erdogan stressed the critical importance of the recent ceasefire for global stability. The ceasefire, facilitated by US President Trump and regional partners, is deemed essential for both Palestinian welfare and global peace. Erdogan highlighted the extensive damage inflicted on Gaza by Israel, which has severely hindered Palestinian development efforts.
Erdogan expressed the urgency of accelerating humanitarian aid and commencing reconstruction efforts in Gaza, underscoring the indispensable role of UN agencies. Trkiye remains committed to supporting a lasting truce and aiding the reconstruction of the Palestinian enclave, reinforcing its commitment to regional peace and humanitarian principles.
On Turkish social media platform Nsosyal, Communications Chief Burhanettin Duran echoed the president's renewable energy vision, emphasizing Trkiye's determination in its energy transformation. Duran reiterated the importance of maintaining the Gaza ceasefire and supporting reconstruction efforts, reflecting Trkiye's dedication to peace and stability.
