Istanbul: Evaluating US tariff decisions, the Turkish deputy trade minister has said Trkiye does not pose a risk for the US in the trade field, as Trkiye is on the "white list."
According to Anadolu Agency, Murat Tuzcu, speaking at an event, "Towards the $100 Billion Trade Volume Target: A New Era in Turkish-American Economic Relations," organized by the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Trkiye (DEIK) in Istanbul, emphasized Trkiye's ambition to increase its share in US imports, which are valued at $3.5 trillion, to 1.5%.
Trkiye is among the countries with the lowest tariffs and maintains a balanced trade volume with the US, coupled with significant mutual investments, Tuzcu noted. He highlighted that while the country's exports to the US currently range between $16 and $17 billion, there is room for growth, especially when excluding sectors like petroleum and energy. Tuzcu underscored the need to expand the product basket and outlined a strategy for capitalizing on products from countries losing market share due to tariffs.
Nail Olpak, head of DEIK, pointed out that only a few countries can achieve a $100 billion level in bilateral trade with the US. He stated that this target holds special significance and mentioned sectors like defense, digital technologies, and energy as focal areas.
Murat Ozyegin, head of the Trkiye-US Business Council, reminded the audience of a prior agreement between Turkish and US presidents on a $100 billion trade volume target. He noted that the current trade worth $45 billion, including services, highlights the potential for reaching this goal. Ozyegin also remarked that new tariff regulations and geopolitical developments present both opportunities and risks, emphasizing the positive distinction of balanced trade between Trkiye and the US. He added that the increased presence of Turkish companies in the US market through high-value-added investments fosters a strategic partnership between the two nations.
