Ankara: Trkiye's National Defense Ministry announced that the Turkish Armed Forces are prepared to undertake any mission as part of the Gaza Task Force. The statement followed inquiries about Turkey's potential involvement in the task force, with Defense Ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk highlighting the military's history of participating in international missions for global peace and security.
According to Anadolu Agency, Akturk emphasized the Turkish army's professionalism and its well-regarded stance, stating that the forces are ready for any assigned duties. He also expressed approval of the recent ceasefire in Gaza, achieved through Trkiye's mediation. Akturk noted the importance of providing humanitarian aid and initiating reconstruction in the region, which has faced a humanitarian crisis for two years. The ceasefire is hoped to foster a just and lasting peace, contributing to a two-state solution.
The announcement coincided with the Israeli army's gradual withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, aiming to complete the process in line with US President Donald Trump's plan within a day.
The Ministry also addressed regional security and developments in Syria. It viewed the recent Syrian elections as a positive move for the country's unity and stability. However, the Ministry noted ongoing threats from the YPG/SDG terror group against Syrian government forces, indicating non-compliance with a March 2025 agreement.
On modernizing Trkiye's Air Force, ministry sources confirmed ongoing efforts to diversify and update the fleet until the national fighter jet KAAN is operational. They assured that an official announcement would follow once a decision on purchasing Eurofighter jets is finalized. Regarding Trkiye's potential exclusion from the European Defense and Security Architecture (SAFE), sources highlighted the importance of inclusivity for European security and affirmed Trkiye's commitment to defense cooperation with European partners.
The Defense Ministry reported the capture of 294 individuals, including two suspected terrorists, attempting illegal border crossings during the week, adding up to a total of 7,471 since January 1. Akturk detailed the military's ongoing national and international training to enhance readiness across various domains. Recent exercises included 'Trkiye-Algeria Special Forces Training' in Ankara and 'Adaptive Hussar Field Exercise' in Hungary, among others.
