Ankara: More than 81,500 Syrian refugees in Trkiye have voluntarily returned to their home country since December 9, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Wednesday. Speaking at an event in Ankara, Yerlikaya emphasized that Trkiye currently hosts more than 4.1 million foreign nationals, including 2.86 million Syrians.

According to Anadolu Agency, Yerlikaya highlighted Trkiye's stance against oppressors and its support for the oppressed, noting the country's historical position. He remarked on the momentum gained in voluntary, safe, dignified, and regular returns of Syrian nationals with Syria's progress towards freedom. Since December 9, a total of 81,576 Syrians have returned to their homeland under these conditions.

The minister further noted that since 2017, the number of voluntary returns has reached 821,579. Trkiye continues to provide the necessary support to ensure that these returns occur in a healthy manner and that the process proceeds smoothly. Yerlikaya emphasized Trkiye's comprehensive and strategic approach to migration management, stating the country serves as a model in this field. The approach respects human rights and freedoms, aligns with civilizational values, and maintains public order and security.

Additionally, Yerlikaya reported that authorities deported over 142,500 irregular migrants in 2024 and conducted nearly 7,900 operations against human smugglers, resulting in over 5,100 arrests. Trkiye has also implemented measures to streamline legal migration, including digital systems to prevent illegal employment and initiatives like a 'Tech Visa' to attract skilled workers. The country is collaborating closely with neighboring nations to address migration challenges and prevent becoming a destination for irregular migrants.
