Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkish Petroleum has secured a partnership in the BP-operated Kirkuk production field, describing a newly signed agreement as "a historic step" in bilateral energy cooperation. This development was revealed during a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, following a series of bilateral and delegation-level meetings, culminating in agreements spanning various fields.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan emphasized that the Trkiye-Iraq Crude Oil Pipeline Agreement expired on Monday, and both nations are eager to establish a new comprehensive energy cooperation agreement swiftly. He highlighted the mutual benefits expected from the forthcoming agreement.
During the discussions, al-Zaidi pointed out Iraq's potential to supply Trkiye with up to 1 million barrels of oil per day. Erdogan confirmed this capacity could significantly fulfill Trkiye's oil needs, reducing dependency on other sources.
Erdogan and al-Zaidi also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly concerning Iran, Syria, and Palestine. Erdogan underscored the importance of transforming the region's image from one of conflict to one of peace and prosperity. He stressed that Trkiye views Iraq's peace and stability as integral to its own, given Iraq's history of war and instability.
On security matters, Erdogan reiterated Ankara's commitment to maintaining dialogue with Iraq towards achieving a "terror-free Trkiye" and a broader vision of a "terror-free region." He expressed hope for permanently resolving this issue, which has been costly for both countries.
In terms of defense, Erdogan stated Trkiye's readiness to supply Iraq with necessary defense industry products, while also emphasizing the significance of cooperation in energy and transportation under the current regional security environment. He noted the increased importance of the Development Road Project, which aims to connect the Gulf region to the world through Iraq.
Erdogan further highlighted the commitment of both countries to advancing cooperation on sustainable water resource use, a critical issue for neighboring nations affected by climate change.
The Turkish president expressed a desire to elevate bilateral trade, which neared $17 billion last year, to even higher levels. He welcomed interactions between Iraqi ministers and Turkish business representatives, contractors, and investors during the visit.
Additionally, Erdogan voiced support for Iraq's efforts to enhance regional integration, particularly its engagement with Syria. He welcomed the inclusion of Iraqi Turkmen Front Chairman and Kirkuk Governor Salman Agaoglu in the visiting delegation, describing it as a meaningful gesture.
