Istanbul: Belgium's Defense and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken has commended Trkiye as a 'wise and strong ally' of NATO, highlighting the country's expanding role in defense innovation and regional diplomacy at the 2025 International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF) in Istanbul.

According to Anadolu Agency, Francken praised Trkiye's historical commitment to NATO since 1952 and its advancements in defense technology, such as drones, counter-drones, and laser technology. He emphasized the need for deeper bilateral defense ties between Belgium and Trkiye, suggesting the creation of a new memorandum of understanding to facilitate more industrial cooperation. Francken expressed his intention to sign an agreement with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler in the coming year to strengthen these ties.

Francken also acknowledged Trkiye's diplomatic efforts in Ukraine, stating that Ankara serves as an ideal host for peace talks due to its international standing. He expressed Belgium's support for Trkiye's participation in EU defense initiatives, emphasizing its importance to European defense even as a non-EU member. As part of this collaboration, Belgium will soon welcome a Turkish defense industry attach© in Brussels to represent Turkish armaments and weapons systems.

Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Francken highlighted Belgium's readiness to provide aid, emphasizing the need to protect Palestinian civilians and ensure they receive essential supplies. He noted Belgium's preparedness to resume humanitarian air drops from Jordan to assist the people of Gaza.

Additionally, Francken announced a major economic milestone, revealing plans for a significant economic mission to Trkiye in June. Led by Princess Astrid, this mission will include 500-600 Belgian entrepreneurs, marking the largest economic delegation Belgium has ever sent to Trkiye, coinciding with the upcoming NATO summit.
