Ankara: Trkiye continues to play a significant role in promoting regional and global stability through its active participation in bilateral relations and international missions, particularly NATO, as stated by Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson Zeki Akturk. Addressing the media at the Multinational Joint Warfare Center Command's weekly briefing, Akturk highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Turkish Armed Forces to maintain peace and security.
According to Anadolu Agency, Akturk emphasized the successful completion of basic commando training for 362 Libyan military personnel conducted by the 40th Commando Training Brigade Command. This initiative reflects Trkiye's commitment to supporting Libya's unity and stability by fostering military cooperation and training. Trkiye aims to sustain its relations with both eastern and western Libya under the goal of 'One Libya, One Army.'
Akturk expressed concern over the increasing casualties and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He reported that Israeli attacks have resulted in over 4,300 deaths and 12,300 injuries in Lebanon since March 2. In Palestine, more than 1,300 Palestinians have lost their lives since the ceasefire, with a total death toll reaching approximately 75,000 since October 2023. The World Food Program warns of severe hunger levels affecting two-thirds of Gaza's population. Akturk urged the international community to take effective measures against Israel's actions.
The Turkish Armed Forces remain committed to maintaining high readiness through continuous training and exercises. Akturk noted the completion of various exercises, including the Martyr Personnel Lt. Col. Rasim Sayin Yildirim Mobilization Exercise in Kirklareli and the Air Wolf Hunting search-and-rescue exercise in Hungary. Trkiye's participation in international exercises such as REPMUS in Portugal and NATO's Bold Machina in Portugal further underscores its dedication to regional security.
Akturk also addressed recent ship accidents off the coast of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and in the Marmara Sea, extending condolences to the victims' families. He commemorated significant historical anniversaries and paid tribute to the martyrs and veterans who contributed to Trkiye's history.
The Turkish Defense Ministry strongly condemned a European Parliament recommendation to fund a monument in Southern Cyprus targeting the Turkish Armed Forces. The ministry rejected the proposal as biased and emphasized Trkiye's role as a guarantor of peace on the island for over 50 years. The ministry also stated its commitment to responding to any hostile actions against Turkish Cypriots.
Finally, the ministry is closely monitoring the disbandment and integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to bolster Syria's territorial integrity. The integration process involves handing over weapons and military vehicles to the Syrian army, contributing to a unified state and army.
