Ankara: Trkiye has taken significant steps to support the Global Sumud Flotilla, which is on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The Turkish Red Crescent has provided essential food and medical supplies to the flotilla, consisting of 50 ships, as they navigate through the Mediterranean Sea, specifically between Crete, Cyprus, and Egypt.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trkiye also played a crucial role in the emergency evacuation of passengers from the vessel Johnny M. The ship, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, issued a distress call due to water intake. Bernard Pierre Laguna, the French captain of Johnny M, confirmed that the situation necessitated the evacuation of all 12 passengers on board to a safer vessel. Laguna expressed his hopes for the success and safety of the remaining flotilla en route to Gaza, while he planned to return to Marseille.
Yasemin Acar, an activist involved in the flotilla, emphasized the group's unwavering commitment to reaching Gaza. Despite facing adverse weather conditions and threats, including those from Israel, Acar highlighted the determination of the activists and the importance of their mission to deliver aid. She noted that over 40 vessels and hundreds of activists from various countries are part of this effort, with about three days left to reach their destination.
The Turkish authorities, alongside the Turkish Red Crescent, coordinated the evacuation efforts for passengers from countries including Luxembourg, France, Finland, Mexico, and Malaysia. The flotilla's Instagram account praised the swift action of the Turkish government and the Red Crescent, resulting in a successful evacuation operation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, one of the largest aid efforts for Gaza, comprises dozens of ships carrying substantial humanitarian aid, notably medical supplies. The flotilla's mission embodies the spirit of "Sumud," an Arabic term signifying steadfastness and resistance, especially significant to Palestinians since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. This non-violent resistance aims to preserve Palestinian identity and advocate for their rights in the face of occupation.
