Berlin: Trkiye aims to reach a $10 billion bilateral trade volume with Syria in the short and medium term as the country enters the post-Assad era, Ibrahim Fuat Ozcorekci, head of the Trkiye-Syria Business Council for the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK), told Anadolu. Ozcorekci emphasized Trkiye's position as a 'natural partner' for Syria, highlighting the increase in trade volume from $250 million-$300 million before the Syrian civil war began in 2011 to a projected $2.5 billion by 2024.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ozcorekci detailed the main Turkish exports to Syria, which include iron and steel, plastics, household goods, construction materials, and food products, while Syria primarily exports cotton, olive oil, and sunflower oil to Trkiye. He stressed the necessity for establishing trade institutions in Syria and mentioned that the Turkish Foreign Economic Relations Board is collaborating with the Syrian business community in Trkiye to enhance trade relations.

Ozcorekci pointed out that the logistical proximity of Turkish cities in southeastern Trkiye to the Syrian border provides a strategic advantage, positioning Trkiye to play a crucial role in Syria's reconstruction. He emphasized the importance of trade cooperation between the two nations, noting that Trkiye is well-placed to meet Syria's reconstruction needs.

He also highlighted the significance of last month's reopening of the Turkish Embassy in Damascus and mentioned that a future Turkish consulate in Aleppo would further assist the Turkish business community. The presence of millions of Syrians in Trkiye, many of whom have started successful businesses, also contributes to the strengthening of economic ties.
