Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on Monday that Trkiye will closely monitor the practical steps following the PKK terror group's decision to dissolve itself. Fidan emphasized the potential benefits of this decision for the future if implemented sincerely, during a joint news conference with his Syrian and Jordanian counterparts in Ankara.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan described the PKK's decision as historic and significant for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region. He highlighted the ongoing regional and international diplomatic efforts since the fall of the Baath regime in Syria on Dec. 8, 2024. Fidan noted that Syria's neighbors are seeking solutions to existing problems with a sense of regional ownership, affirming Trkiye's full support for Syria in every field.
The meeting addressed various issues in Syria, including the prevention of terrorist organizations from exploiting the current situation. Fidan pointed out the threat posed by the YPG/PKK's occupation of one-third of Syrian territory. He also emphasized the importance of combating ISIS, noting that a state-level group involving five regional countries is actively fighting the terror group. Discussions included concrete steps and potential actions to address these challenges.
Regarding Israeli actions in Syrian territories, Fidan criticized Tel Aviv's expansionism, stating it threatens Syria's stability and security. He stressed the shared regional view that such provocations must end promptly. Additionally, Fidan addressed Syria's financial difficulties and ongoing efforts to lift international diplomatic sanctions imposed by the EU and the US during the Assad-era regime.
Fidan reiterated Trkiye's support for the Syrian government's initiatives, including the formation of a new parliament, constitutional development, and existing governmental operations. He also mentioned the indirect impact of regional issues on Syria, specifically the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and discussed collaborative efforts with Jordan to address this crisis.
Fidan highlighted Trkiye's role in facilitating a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with an upcoming meeting scheduled in Istanbul on May 15. He noted the positive reception of reconciliation efforts by various international parties and emphasized Trkiye's readiness to contribute as a facilitator and host. Expressing optimism about the evolving situation, Fidan reiterated Trkiye's commitment to peaceful resolutions in the Black Sea, the Balkans, and the Aegean regions.
Highlighting the importance of compromise, Fidan called for the warring parties to come together swiftly and initiate a ceasefire, reflecting Ankara's dedication to fostering peace and stability in the region.
