Ankara: Trkiye's Permanent Delegation to the EU warned the Union's institutions on Thursday against taking positions that could undermine the country's judicial independence. In a statement, the official responded to a series of meetings held on Trkiye during the European Parliament's Plenary Session in Strasbourg from March 31 to April 3.

According to Anadolu Agency, the delegation criticized the sessions as politically motivated and an attempt to deflect from the EU's internal difficulties. The statement expressed that it was strange for the European Parliament to divert attention instead of addressing its own problems during the challenging period the European Union is experiencing.

The delegation expressed concern over the general tone of the meetings, suggesting they had become a platform for extreme and unfounded rhetoric. They noted that the transformation of the European Parliament into a platform where irrational and tactless views are expressed is worrying for the future of the EU. The meetings, it was noted, provided an opportunity for extremist and racist factions from various backgrounds who aim to push Trkiye away from the EU.

Regarding the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos' announcement about her visit to Trkiye, where she stated she would not visit, the statement described the move as politically motivated. The delegation viewed Kos' announcement as a decision driven by political motives aimed at satisfying certain circles within the EU. The statement added that such a stance contradicted the neutrality expected from the European Commission, emphasizing that Commissioner Kos' position is incompatible with the impartiality expected from the European Commission.

The statement also criticized the Union for adopting an inconsistent approach to ongoing legal processes. It highlighted that it is unacceptable for the EU to display an approach that undermines judicial independence and the rule of law in Trkiye. The delegation concluded by pointing out the contradiction and lack of conviction in certain circles that avoid commenting on judicial processes in some EU member states while expressing views on legal processes in Trkiye that have not yet been concluded.
