Lefkosa: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared that Trkiye will steadfastly support the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) whenever needed, continuing its historical commitment to the region. Erdogan's statement came during the inauguration of the TRNC Presidential Complex in Lefkosa.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan emphasized Trkiye's dedication to assisting in all domains, including enhancing relations with the Turkic world and addressing the isolation faced by Turkish Cypriots. During the ceremony, Erdogan described the newly opened Presidential Complex as a testament to the TRNC's resolve to exist despite challenges and injustices. The complex, whose construction began in 2022, spans 639,475 square meters and features facilities such as the presidential palace, the Republic Assembly, the high court, and a public garden.

The Cyprus issue has been a persistent conflict between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, with numerous diplomatic interventions by the UN to reach a resolution. Ethnic tensions starting in the early 1960s led Turkish Cypriots to retreat into safe enclaves. In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at unifying the island with Greece prompted Trkiye to intervene militarily, safeguarding Turkish Cypriots and leading to the establishment of the TRNC in 1983.

Despite attempts to foster peace, including a stalled 2017 initiative in Switzerland with Trkiye, Greece, and the UK as guarantors, the conflict remains unresolved. The Greek Cypriot administration joined the EU in 2004, the same year Greek Cypriots rejected a UN plan to resolve the enduring dispute.
