Nashville: A traditionally Republican congressional seat in Tennessee is drawing intense attention from both parties ahead of Tuesday's special election, with US President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson making a final push to boost GOP turnout, US media reported on Monday. Trump called on voters twice on Monday to support Republican nominee Matt Van Epps, emphasizing the significance of the election by stating, "The whole world is watching Tennessee right now, and they're watching your district," according to the Huffpost.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump, while speaking during an event in Franklin, asserted that the election results would demonstrate the Republican Party's unprecedented strength. Meanwhile, Democrats are hopeful for an unexpected victory in the 7th Congressional District, which was redrawn in 2022 with the intention of diminishing Nashville's influence.
The district has historically favored Republicans, with Trump and former GOP Republican Mark Green securing victories by approximately 21-22 points in 2020 and 2022. Democratic candidate Aftyn Behn, a progressive state legislator from Nashville, has rallied support by participating in a virtual event alongside former Vice President Al Gore and Republican Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Gore described the election as a pivotal moment, remarking, "I have never seen the political tides shift as far and as fast as we're seeing them move in this election." Ocasio-Cortez added her optimism by stating, "Anything can happen - including in Tennessee."
The race has attracted substantial financial investments, with the House Majority PAC allocating $1 million to support Behn, while the pro-Trump MAGA Inc. super PAC has similarly spent over $1 million backing Van Epps. Speaker Johnson emphasized the significance of the election, declaring it "for all the marbles," and cautioned that Democrats "think they can flip this seat from red to blue."
Trump's renewed involvement in the campaign follows recent Republican setbacks in elections. A Van Epps supporter underscored the importance of the election by stating, "We want to continue the Trump agenda in this district." Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries anticipated a closely contested race, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the significant financial efforts to retain a seat that Trump had previously secured by a wide margin.
