Kharkiv:According to Anadolu Agency, US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate ceasefire targeting each other's energy infrastructure. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, stating that both parties have agreed to halt attacks.
However, a White House official clarified that Trump's announcement refers to a potential arrangement that involves stopping strikes on oil refineries. This step could lead to a broader agreement to protect power plants and electricity networks. The imbalance in Trump's proposal was noted by a Ukrainian official, who emphasized Ukraine's reliance on imported diesel and gasoline and its need to protect its power grid, given that it has only one not fully operational refinery.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the announcement, expressing surprise but readiness to agree if Russia consents to the ceasefire. He mentioned discussing the initiative with Western leaders and emphasized the importance of Russia's support for the ceasefire. Zelenskyy also confirmed that the Ukrainian military has received operational orders following the announcement, despite a power plant in Kharkiv being attacked shortly after Trump's statement.
Meanwhile, there has been no confirmation from Moscow regarding the agreement's implementation. A White House official indicated that Russia is considering the ceasefire, and a decision is expected soon.
In parallel diplomatic developments, the Financial Times reported that the Trump administration threatened to suspend military support to Ukraine unless it halts strikes on Russian energy targets. The US has pressured European allies and Ukraine to curb attacks on Russian refineries, warning of potential cuts to intelligence sharing and weapons procurement mechanisms.
Zelenskyy stated Kyiv's willingness to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow ceases its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, highlighting the need for reciprocal actions supported by guarantees.
Trump attributed rising consumer energy costs to the conflict in Ukraine, noting the national average price for gasoline has increased significantly over the past year. This announcement comes after Trump unveiled a diesel supply agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Zelenskyy criticized as beneficial to Russia's war effort.
