Washington:US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will cease providing financial aid to Israel by the end of the year, following an agreement with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Trump stated that the agreement, made months ago, involved stopping the annual $4 billion aid to Israel. He mentioned that Netanyahu and Israel are agreeable to the plan, citing Israel's success and reduced need for financial assistance. Trump assured that the US would still offer help if necessary, maintaining the strong relationship with Israel, although emphasizing Israel as a smaller regional partner.
Trump further explained that the cessation of aid includes both direct financial grants and material defense transfers. He clarified that while foreign aid packages will end, commercial arms sales will continue, allowing Israel to purchase American defense equipment on the open market due to the US's reputation for producing top-tier weaponry.
The president addressed criticisms from progressive political figures and younger Americans who have called for stopping military shipments to Israel. Trump argued that the $4 billion aid has become a political target and that Netanyahu proposed phasing out the aid due to its domestic political implications in Israel. Israeli officials have yet to comment on Trump's announcement or confirm any formal agreement regarding the termination of US assistance.
