Trump Announces Significant Reduction of US Troops in Germany

Miami: President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the United States intends to significantly reduce its military presence in Germany. The announcement comes as part of a larger decision to scale back forces, with the reduction expected to go well beyond 5,000 troops.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump's statement was made to reporters in Florida, following the Pentagon's announcement on Friday regarding the troop cut in Germany, which serves as the largest US military hub in Europe. The decision aligns with increasing tensions between Washington and its European allies over issues such as the Iran war and tariffs.

The Pentagon has confirmed that approximately 5,000 troops will be withdrawn from Germany, as ordered by the US defense chief. This action follows President Trump's comments about reviewing the US military presence in Germany. These remarks were in response to criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who accused the US of lacking a clear exit strategy in the Iran war and suggested that American forces were being undermined by Iranian leadership during negotiations.

In reaction to the troop withdrawal decision, the chairs of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, Sen. Roger Wicker and Rep. Mike Rogers, expressed their concerns. They released a joint statement on Saturday emphasizing their apprehension about the removal of a US brigade from Germany.
