Davos: US President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Syria's new leadership, stating that President Ahmad al-Sharaa is making significant strides following the ouster of Bashar Assad's regime. "By the way, (I) spoke with the president, (who) is making a lot of progress, tremendous progress," Trump remarked at the Board of Peace Charter signing ceremony on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

According to Anadolu Agency, the US president expressed satisfaction with the developments in Syria, noting that Washington is "very happy about that" and has lifted all sanctions to provide Damascus "a chance to breathe and ease." Trump further commented on al-Sharaa's efforts, stating, "He (al-Sharaa) is working very, very hard, and I think he's going to put it all together."

Syria's government has increased security efforts after the removal of Assad in December 2024, ending his 24-year rule. In response to these changes, the US has lifted several sanctions that were previously imposed on the country, including the 2019 Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act. This act had allowed economic and travel restrictions on individuals aiding Assad's military, intelligence, aviation, or energy sectors.
