Kuala lumpur: US President Donald Trump arrived in Malaysia on Sunday to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and oversee the signing of a peace accord between Cambodia and Thailand. The agreement aims to resolve tensions following deadly border clashes between the two nations.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump’s arrival was marked by a welcoming ceremony hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Trump had announced on Saturday that the peace deal would be signed “immediately” upon his arrival, following Anwar’s successful mediation of a ceasefire in July.
The ASEAN Summit, themed “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” addresses key issues such as regional security, economic resilience, maritime disputes, and global tariffs. Notable attendees include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Chinese Premier Li Qiang, and Japan’s first female Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Additionally, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon are participating in the summit.
Trump’s itinerary in Asia also includes visits to Japan and South Korea, during which he is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday.
