Trump Claims North Korea’s Kim Responded to His Request for Talks

Ankara: President Donald Trump announced Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded to his request for a conversation, countering a reporter's suggestion that Pyongyang had not replied. During a press interaction, Trump was questioned about Kim's response, to which he affirmed, "Um, yeah, yes," and emphasized the mutual respect and understanding between him and Kim Jong Un. According to Anadolu Agency, Trump's comments came shortly after he directed the Pentagon to "substantially reduce" planned joint military exercises with South Korea, citing the high costs and his diplomatic rapport with Kim. Additionally, Trump linked his decision to a recent exchange with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who declined to collaborate with Washington on efforts to "denuclearize Iran." On Monday, Trump reiterated his criticism of South Korea for its reluctance to aid the US in its confrontation with Iran, questioning the financial burden on the US for maintaining its military presence in South Korea. Tr ump pointed out the deployment of 39,000 US soldiers in South Korea as a protective measure against North Korea, expressing confusion over Seoul's refusal to participate in a military operation in Iran. He further questioned the cost implications of the US military's role in safeguarding South Korea, asking, "Then why are we involved with helping you?"
