Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Iran reconsidered its decision to execute 837 protesters after receiving a stern warning from Washington, which cautioned that such actions would have severe repercussions.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump revealed during a discussion with reporters that the Iranian authorities had planned mass executions, but the US intervened by signaling that such measures would lead to a “very bad day” for Iran. He noted that following this warning, Iran decided not to proceed with the executions, though he expressed uncertainty about how the situation might develop in the future.

Trump highlighted that the authorities in Tehran appeared to have removed the idea of mass executions from their agenda. “We’re just going to have to see what happens with Iran,” he stated, acknowledging the ongoing uncertainties.

The protests initially erupted in Tehran late last month due to the country’s economic decline and the significant depreciation of the rial, Iran’s c
urrency. These demonstrations quickly spread to other parts of the nation. Throughout these events, Trump has vocally supported the protesters and criticized the Iranian government’s response to the demonstrations. He also suggested the possibility of launching strikes if Iran resorted to lethal force against the protesters.
