Washington: US President Donald Trump has recently criticized Minnesota's food stamp program, known as SNAP, labeling it a 'giant Democrat scam.' This statement comes in the wake of a federal judge's decision to prevent the Trump administration from withholding $80 million meant for the program's administration.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump expressed his views on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he also claimed that states like California, Illinois, and New York are involved in similar schemes, allegedly protected by what he calls the 'fake news media.'
Federal authorities in Minnesota are currently investigating allegations of fund misuse under SNAP, particularly in Minneapolis. The allegations suggest that some businesses, purportedly recipients of these funds, were not operational and were involved in misappropriating federal funds. Trump questioned the legitimacy of these businesses, emphasizing a lack of basic services and accusing them of fraud.
Critics argue that Trump's administration, since his return to office in January, has leveraged allegations of fraud to justify cutting funding and canceling programs that are typically opposed by the Republican Party or to penalize Democrat-led states. They also point out a perceived lack of investigation into corruption within Trump's own Cabinet and executive office.
In addition to his remarks on Minnesota's SNAP program, Trump has reiterated his stance on immigration, suggesting that migrants involved in fraudulent activities should be deported. He has previously made derogatory remarks about migrants from Africa and Somalia, contrasting them with his preference for migrants from countries like Denmark and Switzerland.
Furthermore, Trump announced plans to suspend federal funding for sanctuary cities and states starting February 1, as part of a broader immigration enforcement strategy. This decision follows the controversial shooting of US citizen Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, an incident that has prompted demands for state involvement in the FBI's ongoing investigation.
