Washington: US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reached an agreement to intensify economic pressure on Iran, specifically targeting its oil sales to China, as reported by Axios.

According to Anadolu Agency, the agreement took place during a meeting between Trump and Netanyahu at the White House. The report cites two American officials who were briefed on the issue. A senior US official indicated that both leaders agreed to implement maximum pressure against Iran, particularly concerning its oil sales to China.

Despite aligning on the objective, Trump and Netanyahu expressed differing views on the approach. Netanyahu asserted that a reliable agreement with Iran was unattainable and likely to be violated, whereas Trump maintained that a deal might be possible. "We'll see if it's possible -- let's give it a shot," Trump reportedly stated.

American officials highlighted that Washington would continue its maximum pressure campaign against Iran. This strategy will be pursued alongside nuclear negotiations and a military buildup in the Middle East, ensuring the option of military strikes remains viable if diplomatic efforts fail.

With over 80% of Iran's oil exports directed to China, a reduction in Chinese purchases could significantly escalate economic pressure on Tehran. Such a move might compel Iran to reconsider its stance and make greater concessions regarding its nuclear program.

Furthermore, a recent executive order signed by Trump empowers the US to heighten economic pressure on Iran. The order includes provisions that allow the heads of state and commerce departments to recommend tariffs of up to 25% on countries that maintain trade relations with Tehran.
