Washington: US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration is considering the possibility of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America as trade tensions with Canada intensify.
According to Anadolu Agency, the suggestion comes as part of a broader dispute between the United States and Canada, with Trump expressing dissatisfaction over trade relations. On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, "The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don't expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer."
Lake Ontario, which forms part of the border between Canada's Ontario province and the US state of New York, has become emblematic of the growing rift between the two nations. The tensions escalated after the breakdown of trade negotiations, leading to the imposition of a 50% US tariff on Canadian goods that took effect on Saturday.
In addition to the existing tariffs, Trump declared that an additional 50% tariff on Canadian automotive products would be implemented starting January 1, 2027, further straining trade relations. The collapse of negotiations also led to a public exchange of insults between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, with Ford labeling Trump a "dictator" and the "king of bankruptcies."
Trump's criticism extended to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whom he referred to as "Governor Carney" in a suggestion that Canada should become the 51st US state. Trump also addressed allegations regarding his stance on the French language, asserting that he would "never interfere with Canadians speaking French" and criticized Carney for allegedly fabricating such claims.
Carney, in response, reaffirmed Canada's commitment to protecting the French language, rejecting a proposed trade agreement that would have compromised these protections. The US had sought changes to Quebec's laws requiring American companies to provide French translations for various consumer products.
The escalating trade conflict and Trump's provocative proposals highlight the growing strain between the US and Canada, with potential implications for economic and diplomatic relations moving forward.
