Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed no interest in becoming the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. Despite this, Trump confirmed that four other candidates are being considered for the role.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump shared that Bessent prefers to remain in his current position, expressing a strong desire to continue working alongside the president. "I asked him just last night, 'Is this something you want?' 'Nope, I want to stay where I am.' He actually said, 'I want to work with you. It's such an honor.' I said, 'That's very nice. I appreciate that,'" Trump recounted during an interview with CNBC.

CNBC reported that the list of potential candidates to replace current Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell includes former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and Fed Governor Christopher Waller. Powell, appointed by Trump in 2017 and re-nominated by Joe Biden, has been criticized by Trump for not meeting his demands to lower interest rates due to concerns over potential inflation impacts. Powell's term is set to conclude in May 2026.
