Washington: US President Donald Trump announced his decision to nominate Kevin Warsh, a former Federal Reserve governor, as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, expressing confidence in Warsh's potential to become one of the greatest Fed chairmen.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump praised Warsh, referring to him as "central casting" and assured that Warsh would not disappoint in the role. Trump also extended gratitude to Kevin Hassett, the White House National Economic Council Director, acknowledging his significant contributions and explaining why he was not chosen for the Fed chair position despite being a strong contender.
Trump mentioned that other candidates, including BlackRock executive Rick Rieder and Fed Governor Christopher Waller, were considered for the position. He emphasized that all candidates had exceptional talent and a promising future within his administration.
Warsh, who previously served on the Board of Governors of the US central bank from 2006 to 2011, advised Trump on economic strategy. If confirmed, he would replace Jerome Powell, whose term expires in May. Despite Warsh's past reputation as an inflation hawk, he has recently aligned with Trump's advocacy for lower interest rates.
The confirmation process for Warsh might face challenges, as some Republican senators have stated they will block any Fed nominations until the US Justice Department completes an inquiry into the Federal Reserve's renovation of its Washington headquarters. Concerns over the Fed's independence have been heightened by the investigation, which includes scrutiny of Powell's congressional testimony.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has voiced his intent to withhold support for Fed nominations until the investigation's conclusion. Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated that confirmation of a Fed chair nominee without Tillis' backing is unlikely.
Trump's nomination of Warsh follows his ongoing criticism of Powell, particularly regarding the Fed's interest rate policies. Trump has consistently advocated for lower interest rates, aiming to position the US with the lowest rates globally.
