Washington: US President Donald Trump has proposed that NATO be 'tested' in addressing illegal immigration at the US southern border, suggesting the invocation of Article 5 of the alliance's collective defense principle. Trump made this assertion on Thursday via his Truth Social platform, highlighting the potential role NATO could play in alleviating the burden on US Border Patrol Agents.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump's comments followed his criticism of NATO's commitment to the US, sparked by statements from EU leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. These leaders had expressed disapproval of the United States' interest in purchasing Greenland, prompting Trump to question NATO's support for the US. "The problem with NATO is we'd be there for them 100 percent but I'm not sure they'd be there for us," Trump remarked on Wednesday.

Despite his earlier criticisms, Trump shared a more positive outlook after participating in the WEF meeting. Upon his return to Washington, he described his time in Davos as "incredible" and expressed confidence in future developments concerning the Greenland purchase. Trump also praised the discussions around the "Board of Peace," noting its potential impact on global harmony.
