Trump to Indirectly Engage in US-Iran Nuclear Talks in Geneva

Washington: President Donald Trump has announced his involvement, albeit indirectly, in the upcoming nuclear talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to be held in Geneva this Tuesday. "I'll be involved in those talks indirectly, and they'll be very important," Trump stated to reporters on his way to Washington, emphasizing the significance of the negotiations. The talks will take place under Omani mediation at the Embassy of Oman in the Swiss city.

According to Anadolu Agency, these discussions come amidst heightened tensions, with President Trump expressing skepticism about Iran's negotiating tactics. He noted that Iran is a "very tough" negotiator, but criticized them for being ineffective, referencing past military actions involving the deployment of US B-2 stealth bombers against Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025. Trump expressed hope for a more reasonable approach from Iran during the talks.

In a related development, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Israel's decision to classify certain areas of the occupied West Bank as state property. Guterres made his remarks following Israel's move to resume land registration procedures in Area C of the West Bank, a decision initially made in May 2025. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, highlighted the potential for this to dispossess Palestinians and expand Israeli control over the land, actions deemed destabilizing and unlawful by the International Court of Justice.

Meanwhile, tensions along the Lebanese-Syrian border have escalated following an Israeli drone strike that killed four individuals on Sunday evening. The strike targeted a vehicle in Majdal Anjar, eastern Lebanon, despite an existing ceasefire. The National News Agency of Lebanon reported that the attack resulted in several injuries and that the Israeli military claimed responsibility, citing a strike against members of the Islamic Jihad Movement. This incident adds to the ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement established in November 2024.
