Washington: US President Donald Trump intensified his demand Tuesday for Republicans to eliminate the Senate filibuster, warning the party will suffer electoral losses if it cannot pass legislation while Democrats block their agenda.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump emphasized on his social media platform Truth Social that Democrats are more likely to win the midterms and the next presidential election if the filibuster remains in place. He argued that without terminating the filibuster, Republicans would struggle to implement policies, with Democrats able to block their efforts.

The Senate filibuster requires 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to pass most legislation, compelling Republicans to gain support from several Democratic senators despite holding a 53-seat majority. Trump expressed concern that Republicans would be held accountable for any legislative inaction if the rule persists.

Trump further argued that eliminating the filibuster would enable Republicans to advance their legislative agenda. He urged for the termination of the filibuster and the end of the federal government shutdown that began on October 1, following Congress's failure to pass appropriations legislation for the 2026 fiscal year.

Both political parties have historically been hesitant to abolish the filibuster due to concerns about potential consequences when the opposing party gains control.
