Washington: US President Donald Trump has declared that the United States is committed to ensuring the destruction of Iran’s enriched uranium, irrespective of whether a diplomatic agreement with Tehran is achieved. In a recent interview aired by NBC News, Trump emphasized, “We’ll take it out and destroy it, whether it’s on-site or whether we take it off-site.” He further elaborated that the US is prepared to act “with them, or without them,” indicating a willingness to pursue military measures if necessary.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump asserted that the US would consider militarily removing Iran’s enriched uranium if no agreement is reached, remarking that the action would be undertaken “very harshly.” He expressed confidence that such measures would prevent any hostilities, stating, “We won’t have people shooting at us” if a collaborative effort is achieved. Trump further revealed that the Space Force is currently utilizing technology to monitor the approximately 1,000 pounds (453.6 kilograms) of enriched uranium trapped under previously targeted sites, claiming an ability to identify individuals in the area with precision.
In discussing ongoing peace talks, Trump noted that the parties are “very close” to reaching a pact, but he insisted on including a clause to prohibit Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon by any means. He emphasized that the agreement must prevent Iran from “buying, purchasing, or acquiring” nuclear assets from other sources, although he acknowledged some resistance from Tehran on this demand. Trump also clarified that he is not insisting on the inclusion of Lebanon in any short-term deal.
Addressing changes in Iranian leadership, Trump mentioned a “good probability” of knowing the whereabouts of Iran’s “very seriously injured” Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. He described Khamenei’s leadership as “more rational” and “very smart,” indicating that Khamenei plays a role in the deal approval process. Trump assured that any agreement would not immediately result in the unfreezing of Iranian assets, which would only occur after a period of compliance by Tehran.
On the topic of US military presence in the Middle East, Trump stated that withdrawing troops before the “completion” of negotiations would be “foolhardy.” He dismissed concerns about their safety, asserting that maintaining their presence “costs us very little” and does not pose significant danger. Additionally, Trump addressed the issue of American citizens potentially held in Iran, acknowledging the lack of a definitive list of their identities or status. He expressed willingness to assist if provided with names, but noted that a comprehensive list remains unavailable.
