Trump’s Attendance at Ankara NATO Summit Seen as Key for Alliance Cohesion: Erdogan

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted the significance of US President Donald Trump's confirmed participation in the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, describing it as a crucial move for the cohesion of the alliance. Erdogan emphasized that Trkiye is actively preparing for the summit, which is scheduled to take place from July 7-8.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan addressed members of his Justice and Development (AK) Party during a parliamentary group meeting, stressing the importance of the Ankara NATO Leaders Summit. He noted that the summit has garnered significant global attention, with Trkiye determined to make it a landmark event in NATO's history. The announcement of Trump's attendance was particularly noted as enhancing the alliance's unity.

Erdogan also emphasized the importance of 2026 for Trkiye's international standing, citing upcoming events such as the 77th International Astronautical Congress and the 13th Summit of the Organization of Turkic States. Furthermore, Antalya is set to host COP31 in November, attracting participants from 197 countries.

Erdogan reiterated Trkiye's security strategy, stating it extends beyond national borders to regions like Aleppo, Damascus, and Beirut. He described these cities as integral to Trkiye's 'geography of affection and brotherhood' and emphasized Trkiye's commitment to defending its interests and allies.

Turning to regional developments, Erdogan accused Israel of threatening peace and stability through its actions in Gaza, Iran, and Lebanon. He criticized the international community's silence, which he argues emboldens Israeli actions and impedes regional progress. Erdogan condemned Israel's activities as destabilizing, not only in the Middle East but also in Africa and the Mediterranean.

Erdogan warned against aligning with Israel's policies, urging restraint to prevent further regional and global instability. He underscored Trkiye's commitment to promoting peace and stability and expressed solidarity with Gaza and Lebanon.

In addition, Erdogan addressed the ongoing Cyprus issue, criticizing efforts to create new tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. He reaffirmed Trkiye's determination to protect its interests and those of Turkish Cypriots, warning of a strong response to any threats.

The Turkish president confirmed plans to visit the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on July 20, continuing a tradition of visits. Cyprus remains divided, with past attempts at a diplomatic resolution, including a 2017 initiative, failing to bring a lasting settlement.
