Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed cautious optimism Thursday toward US President Donald Trump's 20-point ceasefire proposal for the Gaza Strip, calling it 'light at the end of the tunnel' and implying Russia may support it under certain conditions. Putin remarked on the severity of the situation, citing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's comments on Gaza as one of the world's largest 'children's cemeteries.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Putin stated that while he had not yet studied the full proposal in detail, it includes the formation of an international governing body in Gaza, potentially headed by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Putin described Blair as experienced and capable of playing a 'positive role.' He highlighted the importance of transitioning power to local authorities and managing security, suggesting that everything should eventually be handed over to President Abbas and the current Palestinian administration, possibly with the involvement of local militias.
Putin also voiced support for clauses in Trump's plan that call for the release of all hostages held in Gaza and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. He emphasized the need to clarify how many could be released and on what schedule, stating that the views of Palestinians, regional states, and Hamas must be considered in any agreement.
Trump's plan includes the release of all Israeli hostages, the disbanding of Hamas, the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and the transfer of the enclave's control to an interim administration led by Palestinian technocrats and international experts. Putin acknowledged that Israel's position on the plan remains unclear and will be critical in determining its success.
