Trump’s Statements Highlight Absence of Universal Laws, Says French Premier

Paris: US President Donald Trump's series of remarks voicing US designs over several territories worldwide laid bare an order without laws that apply to everyone, warned the French prime minister on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Francois Bayrou addressed the French parliament, stating that Trump's comments about the Panama Canal, Gaza, Greenland, and Canada have illustrated a reality where universal laws no longer prevail. He emphasized that Europeans are unprepared for a world where the law is deemed negligible.

Bayrou described the situation as historic and dangerously destabilized, suggesting it is the most serious challenge Europe has faced since World War II. He argued that the US' historical role in defending justice and protecting the weak is now compromised, marking a shift from the rule of justice to the rule of the strongest.

Bayrou also referenced a recent meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, criticizing Trump's behavior as an attempt to humiliate Zelenskyy through threats. He expressed gratitude towards Zelenskyy for resisting these pressures.

The French premier condemned Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on EU exports, viewing them as a precursor to a more aggressive attack on Europe's regulatory framework. He urged Europeans to ensure their own security and defense, stressing the importance of supporting Ukraine against American withdrawal.

Bayrou warned that a failure to support Ukraine could lead to broader threats against European nations. He concluded by emphasizing the necessity of solidarity and unity among European countries to resist external pressures.
