Antalya:Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) is planning to launch its first optical Earth-observation satellite, Hursat-1, in mid-2027.
According to Anadolu Agency, the launch will mark the debut of Turkey's first mass-produced satellite series. TAI CEO Mehmet Demiroglu, speaking at the 77th International Astronautical Congress, confirmed that the sub-meter-resolution satellite will operate in low Earth orbit as part of a constellation.
Demiroglu emphasized that this launch will elevate Turkey in the satellite industry. Following Hursat-1, the Hursat-2 satellite is scheduled for launch aboard Roketsan's Simsek-1 rocket between 2028 and 2029. Launching a homegrown satellite on a domestic rocket will position Turkey among the few countries with independent access to space.
The Hursat platform features modular, reusable subsystems for various optical and communications payloads. TAI aims to mass-produce these satellites to reduce manufacturing costs and secure export contracts. Demiroglu noted the rapid expansion of the satellite sector and expressed confidence that cost-effective manufacturing would attract interest from countries worldwide.
TAI's space systems integration and test center, USET, is recognized as a leading facility globally, and TAI is the only company operating such a center in Turkey. The company collaborates with Aselsan and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) Space.
In addition to satellite advancements, TAI recently signed a contract to deliver 14 Hurkus-II trainer aircraft to the Azerbaijani Air Force. Production of prototypes for the supersonic Hurjet trainer continues, with deliveries planned for the Turkish and Spanish air forces.
The International Astronautical Congress 2026, co-hosted by the Turkish Space Agency and SAHA Istanbul defense cluster, is organized by the Industry and Technology Ministry and runs until Friday, with Anadolu serving as the global communications partner.
