Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to engage in discussions with his Nigerian counterpart, Yusuf Tuggar, during Tuggar's upcoming visit to Trkiye, as confirmed by Turkish diplomatic sources. This marks Tuggar's first official visit to Trkiye, and the meetings are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan will commend Nigeria's positive role in promoting regional stability, prosperity, and peace in West Africa. The talks will emphasize enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities, with particular attention on areas beneficial to Turkish businesses. The discussions are likely to explore the potential for deepening cooperation in military affairs and the defense industry, highlighting the shared commitment to combating terrorist organizations.
Fidan is also anticipated to stress the importance of collaboration between Trkiye and Nigeria within international organizations, including the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation. The discussions will cover the ongoing efforts to maintain dialogue between the two countries, particularly concerning the Gaza ceasefire, humanitarian improvements, and a two-state solution.
Furthermore, the Turkish foreign minister will underline the consensus between Ankara and Abuja on respecting Somalia's sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity, aligning with international law.
Diplomatic relations between Trkiye and Nigeria have been firmly established since November 9, 1960. The bilateral trade volume reached $688.4 million in the first 11 months of 2025, making Nigeria Trkiye's largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa when energy trade is considered. Over 50 Turkish-owned companies operate in Nigeria, with investments valued at around $400 million, and Turkish contractors have undertaken projects worth nearly $3 billion in the country.
The partnership extends to education, as 199 Nigerian students have graduated through Trkiye Scholarships between 1992 and 2023, with 149 currently pursuing their education in Trkiye under the same program. This visit is expected to further solidify the growing cooperation between the two nations in various sectors.
