Afyonkarahisar: Trkiye's National Defense Ministry expressed approval for the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and their subsequent integration into Syrian state institutions. The ministry emphasized this development as a key step in preserving Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, reinforcing the "one state, one army" principle.
According to Anadolu Agency, the statement was made during a weekly press briefing in Trkiye's Afyonkarahisar province. Spokesperson Zeki Akturk highlighted the Turkish Armed Forces' continued support under the military cooperation agreement to extend positive momentum in Syria, aiming for lasting stability and bolstering the Syrian army's capabilities, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts.
Akturk also addressed regional issues, noting that Israel's actions in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria are significant barriers to peace and stability. He urged the international community to take concrete measures against actions threatening regional and global peace.
The ministry confirmed monitoring US efforts to establish a de-escalation mechanism involving Syria but reported no official requests received. Any such request would be evaluated with relevant authorities.
Akturk underscored Trkiye's role in regional and global security through cooperation with allies, training activities, and multinational missions. He mentioned the deployment of Turkish F-16s in NATO missions and Trkiye's upcoming role as host for the Southeastern Europe Brigade headquarters, reflecting its commitment to peace and multinational cooperation.
Trkiye's participation in international exercises, including the REPMUS Unmanned Maritime Systems Experimentation Exercise in Portugal and NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defense activity in Romania, was also detailed. Furthermore, the Turkish Stars aerobatic team is set to perform at the Bucharest International Air Show.
Regarding the 'Terror-Free Trkiye' initiative, the ministry outlined the establishment of subcommittees under the Follow-up and Evaluation Board, chaired by Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, to ensure the process progresses effectively.
On geopolitical matters, the ministry criticized Greece's arming of demilitarized islands, welcoming the relocation of the Patriot Air Defense Systems from Karpathos to Crete as a positive step. It voiced concerns about potential violations of the demilitarized status of the Greek island of Rhodes, emphasizing Trkiye's commitment to international treaty obligations and regional stability.
The ministry also noted the Turkish Armed Forces' ongoing support to Somalia in combating terrorism and piracy, coordinating with Somali authorities and Trkiye's Foreign Ministry regarding a recent vessel incident in Somali waters.
