Paris: Trkiye's ambassador to UNESCO has urged the organization to exhibit greater sensitivity and consistency in addressing the killing of journalists in Gaza, highlighting that numerous cases have gone unnoticed.

According to Anadolu Agency, during UNESCO's 222nd Executive Board session, Permanent Representative Gulnur Aybet emphasized that nearly 250 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. However, she noted that UNESCO has only issued statements condemning the killings of 69 journalists.

Aybet stressed that freedom of expression and the safety of journalists are central to UNESCO's mandate. She questioned the criteria UNESCO uses to determine which killings to condemn and why the same level of concern shown for other regions has not been applied to Gaza.

Aybet cautioned that such inconsistencies might create the impression that certain tragedies are recognized, while others are met with silence.
