Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Wednesday emphasized the significance of the Middle Corridor, describing it as the most reliable, swift, and cost-effective trade route connecting Asia and Europe. During a joint press conference with his Azerbaijani and Uzbek counterparts, Fidan highlighted the strategic importance of the Central Asia-Caspian Sea-South Caucasus-Trkiye corridor, especially in light of global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and recent developments in the Middle East.

According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan stressed that the largest trade volume worldwide occurs between Asia and Europe, with Trkiye, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan positioned centrally along this crucial route. The remarks came after the second trilateral meeting of the ministries of foreign affairs, transport, and trade from the three nations. Discussions during the meeting focused on infrastructure projects and joint activities related to enhancing the Middle Corridor.

Fidan elaborated on the topics addressed, including customs practices, regulation harmonization, and the expansion of electronic services. He also mentioned the ongoing efforts to reduce trade barriers gradually. The meeting concluded with the signing of the Ankara Declaration, which outlines steps in trade, investment, logistics, and transit transportation, as well as plans to accelerate infrastructure projects.

Additionally, Fidan revealed that the declaration includes a roadmap and action plan for encouraging investments in priority sectors. The meeting also covered global political developments, with Fidan reiterating support for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, advocating for Afghanistan's peaceful coexistence with its neighbors, and supporting the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Discussions also touched on Syria, with an emphasis on achieving stability, prosperity, and the eradication of terrorism.
