Turkish Official Expects Progress on F-35 Fighter Jet Program After Constructive US Talks

Washington: A Turkish defense official expressed optimism about the potential resumption of the F-35 fighter jet program with the United States after a series of "positive and constructive" meetings with senior US lawmakers in Washington. Hulusi Akar, chairman of the Turkish Parliament's National Defense Committee, highlighted the productive nature of discussions regarding defense and security cooperation.

According to Anadolu Agency, Akar met with key members of the US House Armed Services, Intelligence, and Foreign Affairs committees, as well as the head of the US delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. The talks centered on enhancing bilateral ties and addressing regional and global developments. Akar noted that the discussions, particularly with Rep. Mike Turner, head of the US delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, suggested a promising outlook for Trkiye's return to the F-35 program.

In 2019, the US had suspended Trkiye from the F-35 program due to its acquisition of Russia's S-400 missile defense system, citing security concerns. However, discussions following the July NATO summit in Ankara, coupled with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remarks on US sanctions, have rekindled hopes for resolving the impasse. Akar emphasized Trkiye's commitment to strengthening NATO and fostering regional peace, underscoring the importance of US-Trkiye relations.

Akar also addressed concerns about the S-400 systems and potential US sanctions, clarifying that no discussions had been held about transferring the systems to the United Arab Emirates. He indicated that both sides are working towards resolving the S-400 dispute, which could pave the way for Trkiye's reintegration into the F-35 program. The Turkish National Defense Ministry reaffirmed ongoing efforts on the S-400 systems, promising to update the public on any concrete developments.

Furthermore, Akar touched on regional issues, including tensions involving Israel, Armenia-Azerbaijan, and the Russia-Ukraine war. He urged the US to prevent exploitation by Israel, advocating for fair and balanced handling of regional conflicts to ensure stability. Overall, Akar expressed hope that recent diplomatic engagements would fortify the friendship and cooperation between Trkiye and the United States, benefiting both nations and contributing to global peace.
